Sierra Leonean Journalists Participate in China's 2023 Media Seminar to Strengthen Bilateral Cooperation
In November 2023, a group of 25 Sierra Leonean journalists embarked on an enriching journey to Beijing, China, for a comprehensive three-week media seminar organized by China’s National Radio and Television Administration (NRTA). The seminar, designed to foster knowledge exchange, aims to enhance media development and strengthen the bilateral relationship between China and Sierra Leone.
The participants, hailing from various media outlets across Sierra Leone, engaged in discussions and lectures covering a range of topics, including constructive journalism, media convergence, and China’s foreign aid and international development cooperation. These sessions provided valuable insights into China’s media landscape, offering practical knowledge for the participants to bring back to their home country.
In addition to the educational aspects, the journalists had the opportunity to experience China's rich cultural heritage. They visited iconic sites such as the Forbidden City and the Temple of Heaven, deepening their understanding of China’s history and traditions.
Khalil Kallon, Executive Secretary of Sierra Leone’s Independent Media Commission (IMC), expressed his gratitude for the opportunity, emphasizing the vital role of the media in fostering democratic values and development. “The knowledge gained from this seminar will benefit not only the participants but also their colleagues back home. It is essential that we continue to invest in media development, including professional training and modern equipment,” Kallon said.
This seminar marks a significant step in the growing media collaboration between China and Sierra Leone, highlighting the potential for mutual growth and development in the media sector. As both nations continue to strengthen their ties, the exchange of journalistic practices is expected to play a key role in fostering better understanding and cooperation in the years to come.
